这里是用虚拟语气表达与事实不符。条件句釆取用介词短语without it 代替了。可以把without it 改写为：If there were not the river. 如果没有这条河(实际上有这条河）。

因为这里是一个对可能性的猜测，can是很确定的事情 could 在表推测的时候是可能的意思。
这个could 可以相当于 might 比might的确定程度高一些 ， could 是 quite sure might是 not sure
